ACTIVITIES

  • Barcelona – it is 3 to 3.5 hour drive to Barcelona, we recommend driving to Narbonne or Perpignan and catching the train for a fast and hassle free trip. Perfect if you fancy an overnight stay to break up our holiday.
  • Canal du Midi
  • Canoeing and Kayaking are very popular on the river Aude running through Couiza, often the home to national competitions. The canoe centre is very close to the house.
  • Carcassonne
  • Casino – that’s right, there is a casino outside the historical village of Alet les Bains.
  • Cycling – Use Couiza as a base for yourself, family or given the extensive garaging, your cycling club to explore the Aude cycling routes or discover the foothills of the Pyrennes.
  • Eating out – we have sampled a number of excellent restaurants and cafes from all price ranges and have left cards for these in a wallet in the house.
  • Golf - Languedoc Roussillon Golf Courses in the Aude
                    Golf de Carcassonne: 18 holes, Par 71, 5758 m

  • Lakes – the French love river and lake swimming. Many of the lakes such as Chalabre, have their own beaches: here are the best ones near to the house:
  • Limoux - is the local town and is well known for its friendly, café culture. It is also the home of the sparkling wine; Blanquette de Limoux, first created in 1531 by monks at the Abbey and believed to be the start of Champagne in France. It is good enough to rival many champagnes.
  • Markets – Couiza has its own market on a Saturday morning. Here you can get local fruit, vegetables, cheeses and there is also a butchers stall. However if you are looking for a bigger market then we like the following :
    • Esperaza: market Thursday & Sunday(3km) Recommended.
    • Quillan: market Wednesday & Saturday(10km)
    • Limoux: market Friday all day(13km)
    • Carcassonne: market Tuesday & Thursday & Saturday(31km)
    • Mirepoix: market Thursday & Monday(35km)

  • Places of interest:
  • Seaside- the best seaside spots can be found at:
    • Collioure, nr. Perpignan – a small fishing village heading towards the Spanish border
    • Beziers – well now for its seaside feel and beaches
    • Both are about 1.15 minutes drive.
  • Skiing
    • We are very close to the Pyrenees and the Ski resorts of Andorra. For the best skiing go to Soldeu, just two hours away https://www.soldeu.com/
    • Closer to the house is Les Angles, just one hour away with skiing for a day or weekend. This is also a great resort for summer outdoor activities; mountain biking, hiking lake sailing etc. https://www.lesangles.com/fr
  • Tourist trains
  • Train to Carcassonne:
    • The price is only one euro (1 €) for a railway trip between Carcassonne, Limoux and Quillan in the heart of the Cathar region of the South of France. There are several departures a day, on modern TER regional trains.
    • Trip Time. Carcassonne - Limoux is about 30 minutes. Limoux - Quillan is 30-40 minutes.
    • The complete route is: Carcassonne, Couffoulens - Leuc, Verzeille, Pomas, Limoux-Flassian, Limoux, Alet-les-Bains, Couiza-Montazels, Espéraza, Campagne, Quillan.

    • The region is home to eight AOC areas: La Clape, Quatourze, Corbières, Fitou, Minervois, Limoux, Côtes de Malepère and Cabardès.
    • However, our favourite place in Couiza is the wine shop Anne De Joyeuse where you can pick up the best local wines very reasonably. http://www.annedejoyeuse.fr/index.php?entrer=1&lan...
